Meet Our Doctors

Robert D. Segal, M.D.

Rob is a native Philadelphian who would never turn down a good cheesesteak or soft pretzel. He is the founder of Thompson Peak Family Care and has been practicing medicine in Arizona since 1995. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA. After medical school he completed a 5-year General Surgery Residency at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was Chief Surgical Resident. Dr. Segal was recruited to Arizona by the Banner Health System and was in private practice as a general surgeon in Phoenix for 3 years. His desire to help his patients make the right healthcare decisions led him to transition to Family Medicine. He is a graduate of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program, where he was Assistant Chief Resident.

Dr. Segal is board certified in Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Segal has special interest in treating migraines and, of course, in performing minor surgical procedures.

One of Rob’s goals is to become a member of the U.S. Olympic Curling Team, which will be difficult since he’s never curled before, but he has seen several movies about curling and has a curling broom and a U.S. Olympic Curling Team T-shirt, so there’s always hope.

Paul Sarmiento, M.D.

Paul is a native Canuck who spent time in Los Angeles and New York before settling down in Arizona. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and he is a graduate of the prestigious Mayo Clinic Family Medicine Residency Program. He has special interest and training in medical acupuncture from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and feels that acupuncture can be a useful adjunct to traditional medicine.

Dr. Sarmiento is board certified in Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians.

Paul is an accomplished painter, is a student of kung fu, and enjoys the mixed martial arts. He is a German Shepherd enthusiast and knows a thing or two about a fine glass of Scotch.

Dee Allred, M.D.

Dee is a Texas native who moved to Arizona for college and never looked back. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is a graduate of the St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program, where she was Chief Resident and received numerous honors and awards.

Dr. Allred is board certified in Family Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. She has special interest in women’s health, wellness medicine, and aesthetics.

Before going to college Dee worked as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines, so don’t be surprised if she gives you a little bag of peanuts when she says "buh-bye".

Jennifer Burke, M.D.

Jen brings unique training and experience to Thompson Peak Family Care. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey and is a graduate of the York Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in York, PA. She went on to complete a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the nationally recognized Sports Care/Toledo Hospital Program in Toledo, OH and was Director of Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine at the Forest Park Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in St. Louis, MO. Here, she was able to teach the tenets of Family Medicine to family physicians-in-training and share her love of Family Medicine and Sports Medicine with them.

Dr. Burke is the Chair of U.S. Figure Skating's Sports Science and Medicine Committee. She has served as a team physician for the United States Figure Skating Association, traveling internationally with the skaters, for more than a decade. Prior to relocating to Scottsdale she also served as team physician for St. Louis University and several high schools in the St. Louis area.

Dr. Burke is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Arizona Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Jen is married to Bob Burke, a cardiologist in Scottsdale. She is the proud mother of two very active sons. She enjoys running, yoga, hiking, and spending time with her family. She makes awesome oatmeal cookies. Her goal is to help people live a healthy balanced lifestyle and have fun doing it.

Pantea Shoja, M.D.

Pantea is the newest member of the team of caring physicians at Thompson Peak Family Care. She joins us after recently completing the Family Medicine Residency program at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, where she served as chief resident and was honored with the Family Medicine Golden Resident Award.

Dr. Shoja earned her medical degree from the American University of Antigua. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and Arizona Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Shoja is eligible for family medicine board certification.

Once a Web development and graphic design intern at Intel, Dr. Shoja tutored children with autism before following her calling and attending medical school. More recently, she has volunteered her medical talents during Phoenix’s Crockett Health Fair and P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, as well as provided athletic physical exams for the Tempe Union High School District.

Dr. Shoja has published an article about altitude sickness in American Family Physician and presented medical information on Gitelman’s Syndrome—so feel free to ask her questions about both conditions, or any other medical concern you may have. You can even ask her in Farsi!
